Proof: Abortion three times more dangerous…
Dr. Ingrid Skop does it again in her op-ed, Studies Confirm Women are Three Times More Likely to Die Following Abortion than Childbirth.
This time she busts the 2012 myth that abortion is 14 times safer than childbirth. Here’s why:
- This comparison is made using four disparate numbers, none of which can be calculated accurately (abortion-related deaths, legal abortions, maternal deaths, and live births).
- Even the former director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Julie Louise Gerberding, demonstrated that a comparison between the two statistics is inappropriate.
- The number of legal abortions in the U.S. is unknown.
- Abortion-related deaths are undercounted.
- The total number of pregnancies in the U.S. is unknown because early pregnancy losses are not recorded.
- Maternal mortality data is also inaccurate.
- Higher quality data can be obtained from records-linkage studies in Europe.
- All states with pro-life protections allow an exception if abortion is necessary in life-threatening emergencies.
- Allegations have arisen that state limits on abortion will increase maternal mortality. Fortunately, there are many reasons to expect abortion restrictions to decrease, rather than increase, maternal mortality.
That doesn’t mean we can’t make childbirth safer for women including Black mothers and those in rural areas without OBGYNs and maternity wards in hospitals. No, we will not stop advocating their unmet needs until they are addressed. And unlike abortion advocates, we won’t settle for less!!
And ICYMI, read Dr. Skop’s last contribution “Abortion advocates lie about pro-life protections to create fear, sway votes” which we posted on social media earlier this week.
As we head toward Mother’s Day, Dr. Skop’s information can help us all better advocate for mothers.
