Capitol Hill Briefing: Revolution on Campus to End Lack of Choices

ALEXANDRIA, VA—On Thursday, July 7, at 2 PM, Feminists for Life of America will host a Capitol Hill briefing for student leaders gathering from across the nation about the lack of resources on campus for pregnant women, expectant fathers, parents, and birthmothers. FFL President Serrin Foster says “Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women in the most vulnerable populations.”

According to the most recent report by the Guttmacher Institute released May 2016:

  • 75% of the women having abortions are the poor and working poor (including those in college who have little or no income),
  • 66% are pursuing post-secondary degrees (which could lift them out of poverty),
  • 59% are already mothers (including those who had children in high school and during college).

Feminists for Life of America, the leading advocate inspiring pro-woman, pro-parent resources on campuses across the nation and the creation of Pregnancy Assistance Fund administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, invites you to hear:

Join the creator of the Women Deserve Better® campaign FFL President Serrin M. Foster

rape survivor, student parent, and FFL speaker Joyce McCauley-Benner,

and FFL member Johanna Young, a victim of domestic violence while in college.

An administrator from a major university, who has implemented solutions on her campus long advocated by FFL, will share these model strategies to help others create on-campus resources and support. Kara Sorenson, from Clarion University, will also share remarkable results after hosting the most recent FFL Pregnancy Resource Forum.

Feminists for Life of America will provide students with model policies, resources and support, and communication strategies to help these at-risk groups.

FFL successfully advocated benefits for poor and pregnant women through the State Child Health Insurance Program, worked in coalition with other women’s organizations to defeat the mandatory “family cap” and other punitive child exclusion provisions in welfare reform, and helped to prevent poverty and coerced abortions due to threats to withhold child support through passage of the Enhanced Child Support Act. Foster served on the National Taskforce Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, which worked to pass the Violence Against Women Act, and she also testified before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee in support of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, also known as “Laci and Conner’s Law.”

Seating is limited for this briefing in Rayburn House Office Building Gold Room, 2168. Members of the media, including college and university press, are encouraged to attend.
