A Tale of Two Kates…

I admit it: I’m a royal watcher. Blame it on my three-quarters British heritage (although my ancestors left in the 1600s to pursue freedom from persecution).

So I loved seeing the latest prince — little Louis Arthur Charles — being introduced to the world, and hope that Kate and William, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have many more if she is healthy enough to become the matriarch of many generations of royals (even if some population control advocates begged them to stop at two).

But a tune is stuck in my head that I can’t get rid of: “What’s it all about, Alfie?” performed by Dionne Warwick.

I keep thinking about both mothers named Kate, and the contrast of the new little prince and the baby boy named Alfie whose young parents could not get him out of Britain to get the care they believe he needs in Italy. Before the doctors took him him off the respirator, one told the court he take a few breaths and expire. But he continues to breathe now on his own!

Another couple actually took their son out of the country for care — and he lived. So doctors, and the state, do not always know best.

Let all parents in the U.K. be forewarned: If you have a seriously ill child, you better leave for another safe country or face police to stop you from exercising your rights as parents. Because in the U.K., the state is your parent. May this never happen here in the United States.

We keep Alfie and his parents close to our heart.
