Invitation to Women's History Month events, 40th anniversary and more!

March 2, 2012

You, your friends, family (especially college students!) are invited to the following events during Women's History Month:

On Saturday, March 10, FFL President Serrin M. Foster will present "Peace BEGINS in the Womb and spreads throughout the world" at a dinner banquet during the Consistent Life 25th Anniversary National Conference to be held in Chevy Chase, Maryland. (Please contact conference organizers for registration!)

FFL Board member Susie Zeigler will accompany Serrin as she travels for the first time to Wingate University, North Carolina, to present her landmark speech, "The Feminist Case Against Abortion" at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 13th.

The next night, FFL Vice Chair Cindy Brown will accompany Serrin as she returns to Belmont Abbey College on March 14th to "The Feminist Case Against Abortion" at 7:30 PM.

Serrin was awarded an honorary doctorate by BAC in May of 2008.

Cindy Brown served earlier as executive director of Room at the Inn (RATI). When she found Feminists for Life's website, "light bulbs went off." Cindy shared what she learned with Abbot Placid Solari, who became determined to answer the unmet needs of pregnant students. Inspired by FFL's dream of a university who welcomed pregnant women, mothers and children, the RATI Board made plans for a new maternity home adjacent to Belmont Abbey.

This past June, RATI's Executive Director Jeannie Wray welcomed FFL's Board of Directors to the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Room at the Inn which is preparing to open this summer.

Sadly, this past October, FFL mourned the loss of Students for Life of America Field Director Kortney Blythe Gorden and her unborn daughter Sophy Joy, who were killed in a tragic car accident while traveling from a pro-life state conference in Georgia. Earlier in her short career, Kortney was a residential advisor at RATI. Cindy Brown remembered Kortney as "truly one of the best residential supervisors we ever had." In their memory, FFL offered to plant a tree on the new grounds of Room at the Inn.

FFL also remembers another SFLA staffer, Jon Scharfenberger, who later died as a result of the car accident that took Kortney and Sophy Joy's lives. A pro-life student and pregnancy care center worker were also in the car but fortunately both survived. "The best way to honor their lives is to do as Jon asked. Take FFL's Pregnancy Resource Survey and build our directory so that pregnant and parenting students know where to find help, and help us advocate better resources for those attending college," said Serrin.

This Women's History Month, we encourage all pro-life student groups and FFL activists to help us build our NEW National Directory of Campus Resources for Pregnant and Parenting Students. SFLA is partnering with FFL on this initiative and we plan on publishing results in our next report, as we did earlier with "Perception IS Reality."

Take FFL's Pregnancy Resource Survey now!

In celebration of Women's History Month, FFL has donated packets of our updated "Voices of Our Feminist Foremothers" brochure for kits being shipped by SFLA, along with issues of The American Feminist, entitled "March Forth" to pro-life campus groups. Pro-life leaders should contact me now if you want kits!

Active FFL members and donors will receive their copies of the updated brochure in our next 40th anniversary mailing! Please join now if you are not a member, or renew if your membership has expired!

Finally, if you are interested in a speaker such as Joyce McCauley Benner (a good choice for April which is Sexual Assault Month), Serrin or myself, please contact us now for this spring, or for pro-life conferences, banquets, or campus events next fall.

March forth!

Because women deserve better,
Sally A. Winn
Vice President

PS On Friday, April 27 and Saturday April 28, I'll present "Refuse to Choose: Reclaiming Feminism" at the "Stabilizing Our Future" Conference in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. Join me if you can, and don't forget to pack your sunscreen!
